Natural
disasters have been increasing every year due to the various factors such as
urbanization, population growth, destruction of natural environment and climate
change. Further, Asian region
accounts nearly 90 % of the total affected people in the world.
This
human suffering is happening more in devloping countries, especialy
poverty-stricken countries and also catastrophic natural disasters cause
enoumous amount of economic losses, which sometimes exceed the GDP of these
countries.
Natural
disasters have a negative factor to inhibit the promotion of sustainable
development and therefore it is essential to conduct comprehensive disaster
measures in Asian region.
This
data book including the disaster data of Asian region in the past 100 years, is
compiled by ADRC, utilizing a disaster databse (EM-DATA) owned by CRED (the
Center for Research on the Epidemiology of Disasters, Louvain Catholic
University) in Belgium.
Furthermore,
GLIDE Number Project, which ADRC proposed and has been promoting in cooperation
with CRED, UN-OCHA and ReliefWeb, is applied to this data book.
This
data book hopes to stimulate a process of learning from the past and applying to
the future disaster measures.

発刊にあたって
自然災害は、都市化、人口増加、自然環境の破壊、気候変動など様々な要因により、年々増加の一途を辿っています。そして、その被災者の９０％近くがアジア地域に集中しています。
これら被災者は、途上国、特に貧困国に多く、また、大きな自然災害は、その国のGDPを上回る被害となることさえあります。
このように、自然災害は、持続的な発展にとって大きな阻害要因となっており、総合的な防災対策を進めていくことが、アジア地域で喫緊の課題となっています。
このデータブックは、アジア各国の過去100年のデータについて取りまとめたもので、ベルギーのルーベンカトリック大学災害疫学研究所（CRED）の災害データベース(EM-DATA)を活用し、アジア防災センターがとりまとめたものです。また、本書では、アジア防災センターが提唱し、CRED、国連OCHA ReliefWebなどとともに普及を進めている世界統一の災害コード番号（GLIDE）を採用しています。
このデータブックから、過去の教訓を学び、将来の災害対策に役立てられることを期待しています。
