At least 73 people have died in an earthquake which devastated a string of small towns in central Italy in the early hours of Wednesday, 24 August 2016.

Many of the dead were in Accumoli, close to the epicentre, and a short distance away in Amatrice, where three-quarters of houses were destroyed.
