An earthquake measuring 6.3 on Richter scale hit Bam city in south east of Iran at 5.28 am Friday 26 December 2003 causing 50 to 60 per cent of complete damages of the houses and buildings. Water, electricity and telephone lines were reported interrupted. According to statement issued by the geophysical institute of the university of Teheran, the quake were followed by two aftershocks at 6:36am and 7:23 am of the same day measured as 5.3 and 4.5 on Richter scale. The Epicenter of the earthquake was Jamoriyan region some 186 km far from the south east of Kerman, the Capital city of Kerman province. Based on the first assessment more than 1000 inhabitants were killed and some thousands of people were injured in this disaster. Since the first outbreak of the event, some 50 relief teams of IRCS consisting of 500 relief workers and rescuers in addition toIRCS’s medical teams equipped with ambulances, mobile hospitals, two Helicopters and two planes, were dispatched to the stricken areas to assist the victims. IRCS’s branches in neighboring provinces as Hormozegan, Systan and Blouchestan, Chaharmohale Bakhtiyary, Esfahan were ordered as auxiliary provinces of Kerman to rush to the site of the disaster for assisting the people. More than 5000 relief tents, 3000 Blankets, 536 canned foot, 580 kitchen sets, 9000 heaters, 4473 cartons of bread, 10 tons of cubic sugar and 3 water tanks were immediately sent to the stricken area by IRCS’s trucks.
