Outline On September 30, 1999, at 16:31 GMT or 11:31 local time an earthquake of 7.5 on the Richter scale hit Mexico. The epicentre of the quake was centered just north of Puerto Angel, on the coastal state of Oaxaca, southeast of Mexico City (latitude 16.1 degrees north and longitude 96.7 degrees west). The death toll is 18.

According to ham radio reports from indigenous communities, the death toll from the quake rose Saturday to 24, with all but two of the fatalities registered in Oaxaca.

Nearly all of the 3,184 buildings that were damaged were in the state of Oaxaca. 95 percent of the buildings were made of adobe.

Reports say that 100 homes have been damaged in the city of Oaxaca. The state's governor has declared a state of emergency, and called in the military to help with the rescue operation.
In Mexico City, skyscrapers swayed, and glass fell to the street.
Power cuts caused traffic lights to stop working, and some cars were bounced on to pavements. Telephone lines were temporarily cut.

Eight people were crushed under crumbling walls and an undetermined number were injured in the southern state of Oaxaca, Authorities in Oaxaca city, the state capital 220 miles (350 kilometers) southeast of Mexico City, said damage was moderate and included collapsed houses and church towers The state news agency, Notimex, reported electrical power was shut off completely, and water and sewage treatment plants were damaged in 95 percent of Oaxaca state's 570 municipalities
