Botswana: Flood: 2000/02 Country Information on DRR

Outline On 10 February the Government appealed for emergency humanitarian assistance in light of the worsening situation brought about by weeklong heavy rains. Over 25,000 people are affected, 4,000 houses/huts have been destroyed and numerous bridges and roads flooded or washed away.

An estimated 10,000 households, around 60,000 people have been affected. Over 34,000 people, including some 13,000 children under 12 years, require emergency assistance.

State Radio Botswana reported that some 10,000 homes have been destroyed by the flooding, which has affected large areas of the country.

Most of the countrys major roads were impassable as they were submerged in what weather officials said were the worst floods in 30 years.
