At least 96 people were injured in the 6.4-magnitude quake which toppled schools, disrupted rail services and momentarily cut off electricity to more than half a million homes.

The Taiwan Ministry of Interior and the National Fire Agency said electricity was cut off near the epicenter. Residents in southern Taiwan reported trapped in elevators and outbreak of fire. Highspeed Railway was also temporarily disrupted south of Taichung,the centraldistrict of Taiwan, local media reported.
