| Outline | India has been suffering devastating consequences of this year's monsoon rainfall. Over 8.5 million people have been affected by floods since mid-June and over 780 people have been reported killed in 11 Indian States. Since the end of July, disastrous floods have wrecked havoc in particular in the north and northeastern States of Assam, Bihar, West Bengal and Himachal Pradesh, causing extensive damage to housing, infrastructure and crops. Water-borne diseases have reportedly hit some of the flooded areas. |

On Wednesday, 23 August, floods triggered by heavy rains hit the southern Indian province of Andhra Pradesh which has a population of 67 million. 24 cm of rainfall was recorded on 23 August, reportedly the heaviest rains in more than 40 years.
