The Government of India (GOI) received offers of assistance from a large number of foreign countries and agencies following the devastating earthquake in Gujarat.

Bhuj is the worst affected town. Almost all the buildings there have crumbled and the infrastructure like water supply network, power supply and telecommunication lines have collapsed. Electricity and cell phone services have been partly restored in Bhuj. Air services between Ahmedabad and Bhuj have also been restored.

Though the figures are not officially confirmed, media reports that about 20,000 or even more people have died and thousands are missing. It is also reported that some 200,000 people have been left homeless. Bhuj, housing some 150,000 people, is the worst affected city where 10,000 people have reportedly been killed. Several aftershocks, the strongest of the series measuring 5.9 on the Richter scale, are hampering rescue and relief activities.

There appear to be plenty of doctors in place, but there is still a need for more medical supplies. Some aid agencies say the toll could be as high as 30,000.

Situation and Damages
1. On 26 January 2001 several strong earthquakes struck the Indian
state of Gujarat at the border to Pakistan. According to the United States
Geological Survey, the strongest of the series, measuring 7.9 on the
Mercalli scale, occurred at 03.16 hrs GMT, or 08.46 hrs local time. The
epicentre is located about 50 kilometres north-east of Bhuj city, at a
latitude of 23.4 degrees north and a longitude 70.3 degrees east.
