Outline | A powerful earthquake has hit a wide area in south-eastern Turkey, near the Syrian border, killing more than 500 people and trapping many others in both countries. The US Geological Survey said the 7.8 magnitude tremor struck at 04:17 local time (01:17 GMT) at a depth of 17.9km (11 miles) near the city of Gaziantep, Turkey. |

Humanitarian access from Türkiye to north-west Syria expanded with the opening of Bal Al-Salam and Al Ra’ee border crossings on 14 February for an initial period of three months. Over 4,400 deaths and more than 8,600 injuries have been reported in north-west Syria as of 13 February as search and rescue efforts concluded earlier this week. More than 57,000 displacements were recorded in the area from 6 February to 13 February.
