Outline | The floods have severely affected approximately 24 million people in South East India since the onset of the monsoon season in late July. More than five million people have reportedly been endangered by the unprecedented flooding which has engulfed 15 districts of West Bengal. In the last week of September, West Bengal, Bihar and Madhya Pradesh experienced torrential rains, with many of the districts in these states facing floods. |

Uttar Pradesh ;Over 12,850 villages have been marooned by the floodwaters. Over 10 million people have been affected. Some 500,000 persons have been evacuated. Bihar ;floods have inundated vast areas of human settlements and cultivated land causing the death of 229 people. Over 12 million people in 26 districts have been severely affected. |
Delhi ;Property and crops worth INR 80-100 billion (USD 1.9 - 2.4 million) were destroyed by the floods that hit 11 villages in northwestern Delhi. |

A joint IFRC/Indian Red Cross mission was assessing the situation in full coordination with the state government. A preliminary assessment carried out by local Red Cross units identified needs for blankets, kitchen utensils, tarpaulins, food and clothing, particularly in the states of Bihar, Madhya Pradesh and West Bengal.

In West Bengal some 5,000 relief camps have been opened to give shelter to 957,000 people. The Army has been called in to the affected areas in order to provide relief items and to assist in rescue operations. According to IFRC, 5,000 boats have been utilized in these relief and rescue operations. The Government of India has not asked for international assistance.
