In Hunan, reeling from floods triggered by torrential rains which began on May 31, the death toll hit 96 with 38 missing. In Guizhou, floods over the past weeks have claimed the lives of 49, with direct economic loses of 340 million yuan (US$41 million), according to local officials. In Guangxi, at least one person was killed as heavy rains pounded 23 counties, forcing more than 14,000 locals to be evacuated. Parts of Guangxi's Nanning and Guilin were under 80 centimetres of water after 200 millimetres of rain fell on the region.

From 31 May to 2 June 2005, there were heavy rains in South China from the southeast of Sichuan Province to the east of Zhejiang Province. The rainfall exceeded 200mm in 24 hours in western and central parts of Hunan Province. Due to the heavy rains, severe flash floods, landslides and mud and rock flows occurred in Hunan, Guizhou and Sichuan Provinces.

A week of floods and landslides triggered by torrential rain across southern and central China has left about 120 people dead and a further 63 missing. Fang Zhiyong, head of the Ministry of Civil Affairs' disaster preparedness division, said damage was on a huge scale. "Affecting more than 9.7 million people, the disaster has so far forced 300,000 locals to be evacuated from parts of Hunan, Guangdong, Chongqing, Guizhou and Sichuan since last Tuesday," he told China Daily yesterday.

Over 17.06 million people in 16 provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions throughout the Chinese mainland had been affected. Homes, farmland and other livelihoods were washed away by the heavy rains and subsequent landslides.
