OCHA Situation Report No. 6 2005/07/12
The bridge of Grand Goave is completely destroyed and repair is urgent. The Ministry of the Public Works, Transport and Communications (MTPTC) sent a team and equipment in order to find a solution. It has put in place an alternative route that will allow vehicles to pass albeit with some difficulties for trucks. A meeting will be held on 12 July between MTPTC, MINUSTAH, a company of Brazilian engineers, the European Union, the Banque Interaméricaine de Développement (BID) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) to find a longer-term solution.

According to official figures received from the National Civil Defense, 10 persons have been killed, while 1,535,545 have been evacuated, of which 129,626 were students and 16,873 tourists. Major damages are reported in the housing, agriculture electricity, water supply, telecommunication and transportation sectors.

According to official figures, 8 people died and 1,433,900 were evacuated, of which 162,000 are staying in temporary shelters. Close to 11,000 tourists were also evacuated by the Government and remain safe. Most of the evacuees are staying with friends or relatives. Major damages are reported in the housing, electricity, telecommunications and transportation sectors.

Hurricane Dennis left 16 people dead and $1.4 billion in damages in Cuba when it roared through the island last week flattening houses and downing trees and powerlines, Cuban president Fidel Castro said on Monday. "In total, 16 people died," Castro said in a seven-hour national television broadcast on the impact of the storm.

According to information provided by the Cuban Civil Defense through the UN Resident Cooridnator's office in Havana, sea surges, floods, strong winds and land slides have been reported in the provinces of Santiago de Cuba, Granma and Camaguey where some damages to dwellings, power distribution lines and roads are reported. No damages have been registered in the provinces of Guantanamo and Holguin. As the hurricane is still moving over Cuban soil, further information on damages is expected.
