The main cities affected are Boroujerd and Dorud; however, provincial authorities estimate that there are more than 200 villages between the two cities, which have suffered substantial damage.

At least 38 people were killed when a powerful earthquake struck western Iran. Another 700 people were also injured in the quake which hit the province of Lorestan near the border with Iraq with a force of 6.0 on the Richter scale, state television quoted a local official as saying.
About 200 villages suffered 40 to 100 percent damage in the quake which struck between the towns of Dorud and Borujerd, the unnamed official said, adding that ancient buildings in Borujerd were damaged.

About 800 people were also injured, according to Mohammad Reza Mohseni-Sani, governor of Lorestan province, which contains the quake-hit Doroud and Boroujerd area, state radio reported.

International Federation of Red Cross and Red Cresent Societies
The Red Crescent Society of the Islamic Republic of Iran has sent 100 teams of specially-trained emergency workers, as well as eight rescue teams which include 12 sniffer dogs (a total of 622 people), into Lorestan province, where three earthquakes have severely struck the mountainous region between the cities of Doroud and Borujerd.
