Pangandaran, Java, 2 August 2006 - It is over two weeks since a tsunami hit Java's southern coast, but some 10,000 people sheltering in IDP camps are still refusing to go back to their fully intact houses. PANGANDARAN, Indonesia (AP) -- A tsunami crashed into beach resorts and fishing villages on Java island Monday, killing more than 300 people and leaving more than 160 missing after bulletins failed to reach the region because no warning system was in place.

The tsunami also destroyed many tourism infrastructures, especially restaurants, cafes, fish markets, and hotels in Krapyak Beach, West Beach, East Beach, Batu Hiu, Karang Tirta, Bojong Salawe, Batu Karas, Bulak Banda, Legok, and Bulak Laut Pangandaran.
Thousands of local residents fleeing their homes, are currently being accommodated in emergency makeshift tents and barracks in Cijulang, Kali Pucung, Parigi, and Cidamulih.
A Police post located in the Pangandaran Beach was also seriously damaged. Electricity and communication lines were cut off due to the disaster.
The search and rescue teams are currently digging the debris of ruined hotels and houses to look for more bodies possibly trapped in the debris. Tens of people were reportedly missing in the disaster.

Hardi, a Pangalengan resident, said the wave was coming at a speed of 40 kilometers per hour and smashed hundreds of houses and hotels located some 100 meters from the popular beach.
"The wave was at least five meters high," he said. "More people may be found under the rubbles."
Another resident, Ida, said dozens of local fishermen were feared lost due to the huge wave.
Local authorities have warned the residents to stay away from the beach fearing for more waves.

--15:20-- Some workers in Jica office felt dizzing quake, asked BMG. The first reply of BMG was "Magnitude of the earthquake is 5.5 (not so serious), the origin is 33km depth under the southern part of Jakarta".
Some people are seemed to be evacuated by a false report.
--16:30-- Fuji TV(Japanese Broadcasting Station) called Jica about the earthquake. Jica staff were surprised to hear that Japanese Meteorological Agency reported the magnitude of the earthquake is 7.2. They confirmed the persons in Bandung, but they had not noticed.
Jica checked it on TV and asked BMG again, they replied that there was no danger of tsunami.
Gradually, the damage (tsunami came and the number of the victims was increasing) started to be reported.
