Outline The damage caused by this year's unusually prolonged floods is very extensive. Currently the number of districts affected stands at 52 (out of a total of 64). The number of people affected by the floods is estimated at over 30 million, with 783 deaths reported due to drowning, snake bites and diseases.An estimated two-thirds of the country are under water.(18 SEPTEMBER 1998)

General Situation of Bangladesh - Floods
353,000 houses have reportedly been destroyed, and 1.2 million damaged.
The floods have also caused widespread damage to agriculture, spread over an area of 800,000 hectares of crops, and infrastructure, with 9,160 km of roads damaged, over 6,500 bridges and culverts washed away and 1,800 schools being affected.

OCHA Sitution Report No.5 19 Aug. 1998
The Government would have to provide relief support for up to four weeks for the flood victims. Preliminary assessment by the Ministry indicated that USD 3.25 million in cash and 50,000 MT of food were immediately needed for relief operations. Post-disaster rehabilitation of housing would require USD 10.8 million, and an additional 250,000 MT of grain for Food for Work Programmes for other rehabilitation works. For the most vulnerable section of the population, food support of some 100,000 MT of grains would be required for a longer period of time.

The Ministry of Food estimates that in assuming a moderate damage to the Aman crop, 925,000 MT of imported food grains would be required. If the damage is greater, 1.1 million MT of food grains may be needed.
