Online Tsunami Seminar 2022

Since its inception, ADRC has been organizing the Tsunami Seminars to showcase and share latest research findings, technologies, and expertise on tsunami disaster risk reduction to member countries, partner organizations, stakeholders, and the general public. Although the understanding of tsunami risk has improved, further discussions are still needed in enhancing practical countermeasures.

- While tsunami occurrence is rare, it is deadlier and costlier compared with other hazards. For instance, the economic impact of the Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami alone costs about USD235 billion the highest in world history.
- Non-earthquake sources of tsunami (e.g., the Sunda Strait Tsunami of 2018 and the Tonga Volcanic Eruption and Tsunami of 2022) are still less understood. Hence, early warning systems and preparedness measures are not yet fully developed nor standardized.
- New tsunami countermeasures that protect critical infrastructures (e.g., undersea cable networks) need to be developed to avoid a repeat of massive network disruptions that occurred during the 2022 Tonga Volcanic Eruption.

Against this backdrop, the discussions in the Tsunami Seminar 2022 took a deep dive on the practical countermeasures for tsunami risk (e.g., greater awareness, deeper understanding, and simple evacuation procedures).
